Graeber & Company Mythbusters: Debunking Common Haircare Myths

Blog Home

Remember the TV show Mythbusters? They put popular myths to the test using real science and data. Inspired by that spirit (and a few TikTok trends we’ve seen lately), our General Manager and Educator, Sydney, is here to set the record straight on some of the most common haircare myths—and share solutions using our favorite Aveda products.

Myth #1: Dirty hair takes color better.

“When you try to apply color to dirty hair, the color has to work harder to penetrate oils and buildup. It actually makes it harder for the color to process evenly.”
Clean hair = better results.

For a clean, balanced foundation before your color appointment, we recommend Aveda’s Scalp Solutions Balancing Shampoo and Nutriplenish™ Conditioner to gently clarify and hydrate without stripping essential moisture.

Myth #2: Food-grade coconut oil is good for your hair.

“Coconut oil suffocates hair by sealing it off from air and nutrients. When hair can’t breathe, it breaks.”
Instead of kitchen oils, Sydney recommends professional-grade, nutrient-rich oils designed to penetrate and nourish, like Aveda’s Nutriplenish™ Multi-Use Hair Oil, which offers lightweight hydration without buildup.

Myth #3: Split ends only come from heat tools.

“Sure, hot tools can play a role—but so do sun exposure, cold weather, harsh products, and skipping trims.”
Regular trims, protective styling, and using heat protectants are essential. We love Aveda’s Botanical Repair™ Strengthening Leave-In Treatment, which helps prevent breakage and reinforces the hair’s structure from the inside out.

Myth #4: Shampoo and conditioner treat your scalp.

“Think of your scalp as an extension of your face. You wouldn’t use shampoo to wash your face, would you?”
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Sydney suggests incorporating Aveda’s Scalp Solutions Exfoliating Scalp Treatment to gently remove buildup and support scalp health as part of your routine.
